While studying classical civilizations, the 6th grade explored the Egyptian Art exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a guided tour. Students walked through tombs and the Temple of Dendur, studying and interpreting the hieroglyphics etched on the stone walls. Students learned of the pharaoh Hatshepsut, one of the only female pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Students also saw evidence of the superior embalming process by studying mummies and canopic jars. Visiting the museum brought to life the civilizations they have been studying in Social Studies with Ms. Sullivan.
It is important to schedule some fun time after working hard to reach our academic goals. Students put their gingerbread house building skills to the test as a part of NYCares Day with Sojourner Truth School business mentors. Nothing beats a sweet end to a cold winter day!
The Young People's Chorus of NYC brings its nationally recognized music education and choral performance program to Sojourner Truth School once again! Students in grades 3-8 experienced the joy of singing while mastering healthy vocal techniques and learning music literacy skills. Ms. Maria Pena, Conductor, skillfully led M149 students through a rigorous course of study leading to a community performance. We are very proud of our YPC Honor Chorus and look forward to their next performance in the Spring. We hope you can join us.
Let Freedom Swing brings outstanding jazz artists and performances to Sojourner Truth School. Based on Wynton Marsalis and Sandra Day O’Connor’s conversations on jazz and democracy, Let Freedom Swing includes three in-schools jazz concerts throughout the year: Jazz and Democracy, Jazz and the Great Migration, and Jazz and Civil Rights. Our next concert is scheduled for May 2017.
Forget about walking! Sojourner Truth School students are mastering the art of rollerblading through our partnership with GoSkate Skate Academy. Students in grades 2-8 participate in weekly lessons focused on rollerblading technique, proper safety, and the skating for fitness and fun.
